Sunset on Mars

Posted in astronomy, Mars, Photography, Space Exploration by Curtis on 10/13/06

This is a photo taken by NASA’s Mars Exploration ‘Spirit’ Rover on May 19, 2005, at Gusev Crater. The sun is setting—note its small apparent size and the strange color saturation and light diffusion in the atmosphere. Mars’ rotation period is only very slightly longer than that of Earth, so the sunset would happen at about the same pace as on our own planet.
