From Heart.Soul.Boogie. : this video of a seven year-old Ricky Skaggs picking ‘Foggy Mountain Special’ with Earl Scruggs. If you’re a fan of hillbilly jazz, as am I, then not even Martha White biscuits in the mornin’ can beat this:

He’s awful good, isn’t he? I picked up the mando at about his age. A definite inspiration.

You have a very nice blog, by the way. I will be returning often. :)

Yesssss, Skaggs is the boss. I worked long ago in a music store where my usual co-employee on shift was an old fiddle master. One morning we were going to be doing a whole lot of merchandising and fixture-shuffling around the store so I brought in Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder Live at Charleston Music Hall to play as pick-me-up background music. After the CD was over, this old cat says to me, “Curt, that’s the greatest bluegrass album I believe I’ve ever heard in sixty-five years of playin’. Who is that?” And I told him, and he couldn’t believe it. He thought Skaggs only did country-pop, because this guy was so old-school he really didn’t know about anyone big past Bill Monroe.

    Thanks for coming by.

I had the chance to see Skaggs down at the IBMA Conference in Nashville the first week of October. I walked out the door at the Renaissance Hotel and nearly plowed right into him. Don’t think he’d been P.Oed, but you never know. He is a class act, no doubt, and one of the greats.

Neat story! I missed out on IBMA this year.
